Teacher Tip

The time established for Set Up is also ideal for conferencing with a student or team. Other students and teams know the routine and thus allow the teacher time to speak with other students.

Set Up

Set Up sets the purpose for learning and establishes the daily set-up routine. During the first five to seven minutes of class, both the teachers and the students prepare for the day’s learning. For the teacher, this is the time to display Set-Up Directions, prepare teaching materials, and finalize last minute preparations for the day’s lesson. This is also a time when general and special educators can quickly conference and review the previously planned lesson.

For students, it is the time to prepare for learning. Upon entering the classroom, students refer to the Set-Up Directions, review the learning objective, and complete any Special Directions in preparation for the lesson. Once protocols are introduced and reviewed for attendance, homework, Hot Words, and TARGET materials, students should integrate these into their daily Set-Up. For example, a student may know that he/she needs to enter the classroom, review Set-Up Directions including reviewing objective and Special Directions, place homework on their desk, review Hot Words, gather the TARGET Folder (if his or her role is Supply Manager) and be in his or her seat before the first bell rings.
