Just For Me

The Just For Me stage of the Team-Based Cycle of Instruction directly extends learning from the teacher presentation and team activity and allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the lesson’s content on an independent level. Although individuals are encouraged to depend on team members for encouragement and support, it is also important for students to be aware of the responsibility of individual mastery. The Just For Me stage establishes a daily routine for students to independently apply their learning and transition smoothly into connected homework assignments.

Similar to Learning Together experiences, Just For Me activities run more smoothly when students are taught to follow a protocol.  The Just For Me protocol provides a checklist for students to use during independent practice activities to help them remain focused, on task, and engaged in learning.  Students learn to ask themselves questions as they complete before, during, and after Presentation activities.  They may write their responses, think about their answers, and share their responses.  Teachers may use all of the questions on the checklist, choose several questions, or add new ones to the list if needed.  Students may be given the same questions over a period of time, so use of the protocol becomes automatic.
