Wrap-Up

Just as students need to be prepared and ready to learn, they also need to be prepared to extend learning beyond the classroom.  All students have a responsibility to leave class prepared and organized for continued work with the information presented in class.  Teachers should work together during the last moments of classroom instruction to ensure that all students are organized and ready to transition efficiently.

Wrap-Up procedures may vary from one class to another.  For example, in a science class, students might be required to work with their lab partner to return supplies, make notations in a log, and write down their homework.  Although closing procedures may differ from one class to the next, there are five core elements that should be reflected in Wrap-Up procedures:

  • Identify a time frame for closing activities (1-3 minutes).  Designate a particular time for closing procedures to be completed.  Set a timer.
  • Provide Wrap-Up directions that address returning supplies, organizing desks, writing down homework assignments, and ensuring that students have materials/supplies to complete homework or other extension learning activities.
  • Post Wrap-Up direction in a consistent format.
  • Provide accommodations and/or AT tools to students with special needs.
  • Check student performance at a designated time using a simple reporting system - such as HOT (High Performing, On track, and Target improvement).
