Three-Tiered Positive Recognition

The Boundless Learning program’s three-tiered approach to classroom organization is supported by its three-tiered system for positive recognition. Students are recognized and rewarded at the whole class, team, and individual level.

Whole Class:  A system of recognizing and rewarding the entire class for positive behavior needs to be established at the beginning of the year. Students in Boundless Learning classes can earn chips when they demonstrate desired behaviors related to teamwork, thinking, academic tasks, and technology use. Chips should be given as often and consistently as possible to reinforce positive and desired behaviors and class standards. Incentives should be free or of little cost to the teacher.

Team:  To recognize positive teamwork, many Boundless Learning teachers choose to use team points. Team points should be displayed in an area where all class members can refer to them readily, like the chalkboard or the team scoreboard. After TARGET Set Up, points can be given to teams based on the team’s rating on the Team Scoreboard. (H = 5 points, O = 3 points, T = 0 points) Points should be given to teams throughout the class period or day for demonstrating high quality behavior, teamwork, thinking, task completion, etc. At the end of the class period or school week, points should be totaled in order to determine the Quality Team of the Week. This team should receive recognition, which can be in the form of a Quality Team of the Week Certificate. Each week, the teams begin with zero points.

Individual:  Lastly, individual recognition is an integral part of Boundless Learning. Individual accomplishments and positive behaviors of students are recognized and rewarded. It is important to emphasize this third aspect of the three-tiered reward system. It affords the teacher the ability to recognize individual students who are members of a struggling team. Many teachers use the Boundless Learning tickets provided in their Implementation Kits. As individual students demonstrate desired behavior, the teacher simply hands the student a ticket. The student then writes his or her name on the ticket. Procedures should be set as to how and when the ticket can be placed in the ticket jar. Some teachers are comfortable allowing students to get up during instruction and place the ticket in the jar. Others ask students to wait until there is a natural break or until the end of class. Once a week one ticket is selected and that student is the Student of the Week. Other Boundless Learning teachers choose to use a Success Card to monitor individual students. Success Cards provide teachers an easy, practical way of monitoring individual accomplishments. When individual students complete a success card with a certain amount of H’s – that student can earn an incentive. An individual reward system encourages students to compete with themselves, rather than with other students, for recognition.
