Through this module, we will explore ways to create a learning environment that supports developmentally appropriate practices.

Overview

In this module, we will discover ways to create a learning environment that supports developmentally appropriate practices. We will attain this goal through several objectives, including: defining “developmentally appropriate practices,” exploring ways that the environment supports developmentally appropriate practices, understanding how to use activity centers to optimize children's learning, and understanding how building reciprocal relationships with the children in our care and their families helps promote their learning and development.

We will be looking at different settings and groups throughout this session. The information in this session can be used by a variety of educators who work in different settings.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Define what Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) means.
  2. Identify the guidelines for making a developmentally appropriate practice environment for children.
  3. Explain that having a Developmentally Appropriate Practice program means that it is age appropriate, individually appropriate, and culturally appropriate for each child.

Here is a printable note-taking form to help you keep track of information, ideas, and other thoughts as you go through the DAP section.
