Making Access Happen

Educator / Family Relationships

Educators should acknowledge and respect individual families’ values and choices with regard to communication. Additionally, educators should remember to communicate the children’s’strengths as well as challenges!

Educators also need to be willing to distribute information to families in multiple ways. Maybe some families cannot visit the program or have long conversations with educators at pick-up and drop-off because of their work schedules. Educators can offer to talk on the phone, send notes home, communicate via email, or create program-wide newsletters to increase their communication with families.

If families are only told about the challenging behavior in the program, their confidence in their child may be diminished. Instead, by focusing on each child’s strengths and being truly excited about the growth they demonstrate in the program, educators will communicate that each child is a valued member of the classroom community.
