Special Education State Advisory Committee (SESAC)

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires that every state establish and maintain an advisory panel to advise the state’s Department of Education regarding the education of children with disabilities. The Maryland Special Education State Advisory Committee (SESAC), serves as the advisory panel to the Assistant State Superintendent of the Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services. The SESAC members represent family members of children with disabilities, advocates, teachers, administrators and other agency representatives. Members of the SESAC are appointed by the State Superintendent of Schools. The SESAC meets four times a year to advise and assist the Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services in planning and improving the delivery of special education and related services for children with disabilities, kindergarten through 21 years of age, and their families.
